Lauki Kofta Curry

At our house we only like Lauki if it has been cooked along with dal. No one wants to eat lauki ki sabji. However, lauko ka kofta or Bottle gourd balls in curry is an entirely different “ball game”.

Ingredients For Lauki Kofta Curry

For Koftas

  • Dry roasted besan
  • 1 med sized lauki
  • 3-4 tbsp
  • 1 tsp ginger garlic paste
  • 2-4 green chilli chopped
  •  1/4 tsp of haldi powder
  • Chill powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/4 tsp of garam masala powder
  • 1/2 tsp amchoor or dry mango powder
  • oil for brushing.

For Gravy

  • 1 large onion pureed
  • 2 tomatoes pureed
  • 1 tsp of ginger garlic paste
  • 1/2 tsp haldi powder
  • 2 tsp dhania powder
  • 1 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala powder
  • 1/2 tsp kasuri methi
  • salt to taste

How to make Lauki Kofta Curry

Making lauki kofta curry is quite simple. The koftas will be cooked separately and the curry will be cooked separately and at the time of serving, you can mix the two.

To make the kofta

  • Wash the peeled lauki and grate it.
  • Dry roast the besan , do not over roast it.
  • Mix in grated Lauki along with all the ingredients listed under koftas, mix well and shape into balls.
  • Cook these balls in an iron cast appe pan with just a brushing of oil till golden from all sides and keep aside. Traditionally this was done by deep frying but this reduces the amount of oil being used.

To make the curry:

Add 2-3 tbsp of oil in pan and heat it.

Now add ginger garlic paste and onion paste mix well , saute it till it becomes golden brown.

Now add the tomato puree and keep stirring at intervals.  Add all the masalas like haldi dhania and red chilli powder and kasuri methi.

Add little water, if required and cook till oil separates.

Once oil has separated add garam masala and salt and some water to make gravy. Once it begins to boil cover it and cook it for 10 to 15 min or till gravy begins to thicken.

Curry is ready. Add kofta balls at the time of serving, or they will become soggy.

Serve with rotis or rice.

Enjoy!
