Ragi cookies

Ragi cookies are one of the best snack options for growing kids as kids require a good amount of protein, iron, calcium, and minerals on regular basis. Ragi is a super food which gives all these.

Ragi or finger millet is loaded with calcium and amino acid threonine. Ragi improves bone structure and boosts immunity in children. It also contains amino acid tryptophan, which helps to reduce the feeling of anxiety and depression in adults.

Ragi cookies can be prepared in very less time. These cookies are yummy as well as healthy. You can give to your kids as evening snacks or anytime time of the day. Ragi cookies can also given to babies during their teething period.

How to sneak in nutrition into Ragi Cookies
This recipe for ragi cookies is made using home made ghee instead of butter. In addition to it, I have also used raisins and dry ginger powder.

I wanted to make this in a healthier version, so I have used raisins instead of choco chips as toppings. Raisins are  a nutrient food filled with essential minerals like iron, magnesium, potassium unlike choco chips which would provide empty calories. Raisins are also known to helps to relieve constipation and increases hemoglobin. They also contain potential anti-microbial and healing properties.

Apart from that, I have used dry ginger powder. The anti-inflammatory properties available in dry ginger powder helps in good digestion in kids. I also always prefer to use organic jaggery instead of refined sugar.

Ingredients for Ragi Cookies.

1 cup Organic ragi flour
1 cup Whole wheat flour
1 cup Powdered organic jaggery / powdered Sugar
1 cup Ghee
1 teaspoon Dry ginger powder
2 teaspoon Baking powder
4-6 drops Vanilla extract
2-4 teaspoon milk
Pinch of salt
10-15 Raisins
10-15 choco chips (optional)

How to Prepare Ragi cookies
Grease the cookie tray generously with ghee and dust some wheat flour. Preheat the oven at 180-degree celsius for 10 minutes.

Take a wok and dry roast Ragi flour on low flame, roast for 3-5 minutes or until you get a nice aroma of roasted ragi. Allow it to cool at room temperature.

Take a large mixing bowl and add Ragi flour, wheat flour, a pinch of salt, dry ginger powder and baking powder. Add ghee and vanilla essence to the dry ingredients and mix well with fingers until the mixture become crumbled.

Add powdered organic jaggery to the mixture. Try to prepare a smooth dough by adding a little milk. Once the dough is ready refrigerate the dough for 2-3 hours.

Prepare small roll out of the ragi dough, the dough should not be very thin. Cut the desired cookies shapes using a cookie cutter.

Place the cookies on the cookies tray with a considerable amount of gape (at least one-inch away from each other). Brush the cookies with little ghee and add few raisins/choc chips on top of each cookie.

Bake the cookies for 12-15 minutes at 180-degree Celsius. You will notice a beautiful golden brown color on the top of cookies. Remove the tray and allow it to cool.

Store in an air tight container once the ragi cookies cool completely. Enjoy!
